After the First World War Austria was largely cut off from its coal deposits. Therefore, it was decided in the twenties at the BBÖ to electrify the main lines immediately. The development of electric locomotives was still in its infancy at that time, but the designers of the Wiener Lokomotivfabrik and the BBC managed to strike lucky with the 1100 series.
